Earth Day at Hacienda Doka: Coffee with a Purpose

At Hacienda Doka, Earth Day is more than a calendar date—it is a daily reminder of our responsibility to the planet. Nestled in the heart of Costa Rica, our coffee farm is on a journey of regeneration, sustainability, and community-centered impact. As we celebrate Earth Day, we’re proud to share the green practices that guide everything we do.

Reforesting the Future

We are actively regenerating the landscape of Hacienda Doka. To date, we have planted over 200 native trees, bringing food and shelter to local wildlife and enriching the beauty of our surroundings. Each rainy season, we commit to adding 100 more trees.

These include species such as Mountain Almond (Dipteryx panamensis), Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), Cocoa (Theobroma cacao), Cas (Psidium friedrichsthalianum), Yellow Bark (Tabebuia ochracea), Savannah Oak (Quercus oleoides), Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia), Guachipelín (Diphysa americana), Water Apple (Syzygium malaccense), and Dama (Miconia spp.)—all chosen to support biodiversity.

On the Path to Rainforest Alliance Certification

We are in the final stages of achieving Rainforest Alliance Certification, a milestone that reflects our continuous efforts to improve sustainability practices. What began as challenges has turned into powerful opportunities to grow, evolve, and reaffirm our environmental mission.

Water-Smart Coffee Processing

Our new dry mill is designed to drastically reduce water usage—by up to 98% compared to the traditional wet mill previously used on the property. This advancement marks a critical step toward sustainable coffee production and water conservation.

Welcoming Wildlife

Our approach is yielding visible results: recently, a coffee finch (Arremonops conirostris), a small bird native to Central America and often associated with shaded coffee plantations, was spotted on our land—a positive sign that our farm is becoming a more welcoming place for wildlife. Our reduced use of agrochemicals is one of the key changes enabling this renewed harmony with nature.

Certified Tourism and National Pride

We are currently in the process of obtaining two important recognitions: the declaration of tourist interest and the use of Costa Rica’s country brand, "Esencial Costa Rica," granted by the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT). These efforts aim to solidify our role as a model for sustainable tourism and national pride.

Community Connections

Sustainability goes beyond the environment. We recently went door to door in our neighboring community to support families and their companion animals, providing vaccinations, neutering, and general care. This initiative helped 75 cats and dogs, reflecting our belief that caring for nature also means caring for those around us.

A Circular Coffee Experience

We’re embracing circular economy principles in everyday operations. Our welcome coffee is now served in reusable slab cups, and all sample coffee packaging is sent to a local company, Pedregal, to be transformed into construction materials.

Wildlife Protocols in Place

From mammals to snakes, birds, and bees, we have developed and implemented responsible wildlife protocols to ensure the safety of both our visitors and the creatures that call our farm home.

A Greener Tomorrow, One Cup at a Time

At Hacienda Doka, we believe every step toward sustainability matters. From the trees we plant to the way we process our coffee, our mission is clear: to cultivate harmony with the planet, uplift our community, and craft coffee that supports a brighter, greener future.

This Earth Day, we invite you to join us on this journey—because together, we can make a real difference, one cup at a time.
